Audi . How to Change a Rear Shock AbsorberThe quality of your car's ride and handling is dependent upon the complex interaction of several suspension components. The eventual wear of these components is inevitable and has a direct impact on the overall ability of the suspension to correctly operate. Many of these parts, such as shock absorbers, are included as part of a regular parts replacement schedule and have specific mileage limits determining their useful life expectancy. When one part of the suspension becomes worn, ride and handling are affected and degraded, requiring replacement of the affected parts. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Wheel chocks Floor jack Jack stands Lug wrench Penetrating oil Socket set Box end wrench set New shocks Step by Step : 1 Place the car in park, apply the parking brake and place wheel chocks in front of the front wheels. 2 Use the floor jack to lift one side of the rear of the vehicle. Place a jack stand underneath a solid point, such as a frame rail. Lower the vehicle onto the jack stand. Repeat for the other side of the vehicle. 3 Remove the rear wheels, using a lug wrench. 4 Locate the shocks, which are the long cylinders on each side of the rear axle. Spray the bolts attaching the shocks to the rear axle with a penetrating lubricant, and allow them to soak for 30 minutes. The bolts may be stubborn and difficult to remove, so extended soaking is always a helpful idea. 5 Locate the bolts in the top of the shocks. Some vehicles will have them mounted underneath the vehicle, and some inside the trunk. Loosen the nuts on the bolts with the socket wrench but do not fully remove them. If the whole bolt spins, secure the other end of the bolt with a box end wrench and loosen with the socket wrench. If they are difficult to remove, spray them with liquid penetrating lubricant and allow to soak for 30 minutes. After soaking, loosen the nuts and leave the bolts attached to hold the shocks in place. 6 Remove the lower bolts on the shocks with the socket wrench. If the whole bolt turns, secure the bolt head with a box end wrench, and loosen the bolt with the socket wrench. Remove the entire bolt. 7 Hold the bottom of the shock to prevent it from dropping, and remove the upper nuts and bolts. If the top bolts are secured through the trunk, simply remove the bolts and let the shock fall out. 8 Remove the shocks from the vehicle and discard them. Untie the wire that holds the new shocks in a compressed state and allow the shocks to extend themselves. 9 Place the upper end of the new shock into its mounting position first, and slide the new bolts in. Install the nuts, and tighten securely with the socket wrench. Step by Step : 10 Slide the lower end of the shock into its mounting position, and install the bolt and its nut. Tighten securely. Repeat for the other side. Step by Step : 11 Reinstall the wheels, and lower the vehicle from the jackstands. Tips & Warnings To ensure the bolts will be as easy to remove as possible, you can soak them with penetrating oil overnight before beginning work. Never climb underneath a vehicle unless it is supported by approved stands. Shocks are heavy, so be sure to hold them securely when removing the top bolts to avoid injury. Audi . Homemade Wood Truck RackTruck racks greatly increase the functionality of standard open-back pickup trucks. Whether it is the ability to carry extension ladders, long lengths of pipe or lumber, racks leave the truck bed open to carry boxes, tools, freight and building materials. Truck Rack Strategy For the rack's frame, use knot-free 2 by 4-inch and 2 by 6-inch pressure-treated wood studs. Pressure-treated lumber uses harder, stronger woods than untreated soft pine used in interior wood studs. In order to further bolster the strength, while increasing function, include stake body type sides and front wood bolsters. This wood truck rack design integrates metal plate and angle at key junction points to allow the wood rack to better absorb inadvertent shock loads by distributing the stresses over a greater area. These locations are the stake pockets at the top of the pickup bed side rails and at each vertical to horizontal or lateral junction. Fastener Strategy Use 3/8-inch diameter, 16-thread galvanized carriage bolts to join the studs together, with two studs on the diagonal per joint. The vertical 2 by 4 studs need to have stake pocket brackets that actually fit right into the pocket holes at the top of the bed sides. These generally have six to eight holes that allow through-bolting the wood studs to the brackets. Barring using commercially available brackets for the rest of the right-angle joints, 3/16-inch thick 2-inch-by-2-inch aluminum angle is used on the inside of these right angle connections. Fabrication Cut studs to length on a compound miter saw with a medium tungsten-carbide-toothed blade. It is also a good idea to run a router with a radius bit over each cut to round the edges as well as the corners along the length of each piece. While this may add an hour to the project, it will pay a dividend in the look of the finished product and less splintering at the least opportune moments. Decide how high the horizontals of the rack should be. These are the side to side beams that would support a longitudinally loaded extension ladder. Usually, six inches above the cab's roof is a good starting point. There should be about a foot of clearance between the stake-body sides. Make a bolt hole template for each wood-to-wood joint so the joints are uniform and no bolt is too close to the sides of the studs, which would weaken them. When assembling the rack and stake side structure, make sure the heads of the carriage bolts face the inside so that any cargo standing up inside the truck does not get scratched or dented by a bolt. At the top of the ladder rails, install strips of ½-inch thick black UHMW Polyethylene plastic with countersunk screw holes. These strips greatly ease sliding heavy ladders and lumber up onto the racks. *First-aid kit: It's a good idea to keep a first-aid kit in your workshop and in your vehicle. Choose one that's equipped with a variety of bandages, tweezers, surgical tape, antibiotic ointment, something soothing for burns, and a good antiseptic. You can find one of these kits for very little money at a drugstore or an auto parts store. Hand cleaner: Most hand cleaners are basically grease solvents. They range from heavy-duty stuff that removes the skin along with the grease, to soothing, good-smelling creams that leave your skin feeling reborn, to precleaners that you put on your hands before you start working so that the grease slides off easily afterward. Some of these cleaners can also be rubbed into work clothes to remove grease and oil stains before you launder them. Gloves: Keep a pair of gloves in the car for emergencies. Thin, tough, and comfortable dishwashing gloves are available at any discount store or supermarket. They cost little and keep the grease from under your fingernails. One problem, however, is that gasoline or solvent may melt them. If you prefer, industrial rubber gloves, available at swimming pool supply stores, aren't affected by gasoline, solvent, or battery acid. Spare tools: If you can't carry your toolbox in your car all the time, try to leave a couple of screwdrivers, some standard-size combination wrenches, an adjustable wrench, and a can of penetrating oil in your trunk compartment. Some very handy gizmos that combine a variety of basic tools into one all-purpose, weird-looking instrument are also available. Hat: To keep the dust and grease out of your hair, and to prevent long hair from being caught in moving parts, wear a hat that you can afford to get dirty. A wooly watch cap or a baseball hat worn backwards works just fine. Cellular phone: This device is useful when you're stuck on a road somewhere with a dead car or when you have an accident. You can call your loved ones or friends for help or call the auto club (some cell phones have an AAA or 911 call button) or the police. Miscellaneous stuff: A roll of duct tape, a roll of electrician's tape, a sharp knife, and scissors also come in handy. .Chapter 2: The Way to Your Car's Heart Is through Your Toolbox C 2 185
